Cornwall and Plymouth

A short but very packed and fun weekend away where we unexpectedly ticked Cornwall off the list of places to visit!

Day 1

After a not early at all start with the sun shining, roof down and tunes on, we headed off to Plymouth for the weekend. A very pleasant and uneventful drive and we arrived in at the hotel…which, much to our surprise turned out to be in Cornwall!

Temperature taken, covid form completed and we were all checked in, nice room, if not a little old fashioned, and with paper thin walls. We certainly had enough storage for our overnight stay with the full size wardrobe and 10 drawers, oh and not to forget the SEVEN full size cupboards in the bathroom! Covid cleaning was obviously very much evident by the over powering fragrance of bleach in the room, so we opened the window and headed straight out for a walk to the nearest beach.

A precarious sprint up a country road, a trek across a field, gate crashing over a golf course and eventually we were on the coastal path and arrived in the town of Portwrinkle. It would have been rude to get to the coast and not paddle so we headed to Finnygook beach for just that. Not the softest of sand, or the warmest of water, but very nice – apart from the slightly soggy jeans from splashing waves.

Quick shower and then dinner in the hotel, not the best food ever – in fact possibly the most disappointing steak and ale pie and hot chocolate fudge cake ever for Vikki but there was gin with a self infusing tea bag so it wasn’t all bad! Steve’s food was good, apart from missing out on the very runny curry sauce! We ended the day with beer and wine in bed watching Britains Got Talent!

Day 2

The day started with coffee in the room being so grim one sip was enough meaning we headed down for breakfast waaaaay earlier than we normally would. The coffee only got slightly better and it wasn’t a great breakfast however Vikki did entertain the dining room full of people by throwing toast across the floor like a skimming stone!

We packed up, checked out and left the hotel, only getting as far as the carpark as Steve had put the car key somewhere safe, meaning he’d left it in a drawer in the room! Key retrieved and we headed along the coastal road to Whitsand beach where we found a Seaview cafe and finally got a decent coffee!

We walked down to a lovely beach with loads of rock pools and nicer sand than the previous beach, lots of paddling and a very nice walk and we stopped to enjoy the view (and for Steve to try on some seaweed hair)! Only when Vikki spotted our jumpers getting wet on the rock we’d put them on did we realise the tide was coming in resulting in a rather soggy ‘wade’ back to the start of the beach and the rest of the day in wet jeans!

More than a little damp we headed to the Plymouth Barbican which was a lovely sunny drive and short ferry trip away. Parking was a bit of a nightmare but after a couple of full car parks we got a spot. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants to pick from and we had a lovely lunch at The Stables out in the sun over looking the harbour (and drying out our jeans)!

We ended the weekend with a very yummy ice cream (mint choc chip of course) and Vikki enjoyed driving the 3-4 hours back home in the same way the weekend started – sun shining, roof down and tunes on.
