Norwich
Friday 26th – Saturday 27th January 2024
Day 1
Unsure if we were actually going to make it away on our first adventure of 2024 we didn’t start looking forward to it until we actually set off first thing Friday. We were very lucky with the weather so it was a beautiful sunny drive , first stop being Wimple National Trust for lunch and a wander.
We picked up picnic lunch bits from Sainsbury’s on the way and bought a coffee to go with it while enjoying the winter sun (Steve trying to be inconspicuous with the picnic and Vikki not caring!)
The farm was a little bit of a let down, just goats, horses and pigs, however we did see some very cute and little piglets. Next was the tour of the house, which while interesting was about 30mins too long and we nearly didn’t get out as the guide had to get a guest to open the door!
It was a cold drive the rest of the way but we arrived at the hotel in good time. Hotel was very nice, not a car park view but a view over the kitchens! Room was nice but small, rubbish pillows and a very noisy extractor fan!
As usual Steve can sniff out a Brewdog anywhere so that’s where we headed for dinner, drinks and games. This one had a good selection so we played the brain colour game, followed by a fun game that was a combination between scrabble and a quiz and finished off with the most bizarre internet search game.
Day 2
Reasonable sleep, although the pillows were really rubbish. No coffee machine in the room but also no instant coffee, instead there were coffee bags which were actually pretty good. Nice slow get up with coffee in bed, followed by showers and then much to Vikki’s amusement Steve realised he had in fact forgotten to pack any underwear at all for himself!
What started as underwear shopping turned in to a bit of a spending spree and Vikki got some bargains in FatFace, including a pair of £89 boots reduced to £23. After shopping we had a lovely lunch in the Cosy Club, although it should have been named the noisy club and it was so full and loud when we arrived.
To walk off our lunch we headed to the castle, only to discover it was closed for renovations so we headed to the cathedral. After yesterday’s longer than necessary tour we skipped the tour and took ourselves round but Steve couldn’t resist re-enacting a bit of Alan Partridge before leaving.
The weather was still holding up so we finished off the afternoon with a really nice walk along the river, although Vikki wasn’t so keen on the angry looking swans.
Dinner was a t the roof top bar which was lovely, although it was dark so the view wasn’t up to much and it was heaving and very noisy. Steve had haggis wellington (as it was Burns night) and Vikki had the most delicious beef and Guinness pie.
We decided to go back to the hotel bar to play card but ended up going on a very long walk to a shop to buy cards first. When we got back to the hotel the bar was empty apart from one other group of people, one of whom was actually asleep.
Unfortunately, a couple of mouthfuls into our drink and our lovely weekend came to an abrupt end and we had to pack up and head home, ending the weekend arriving home at 1am.
Shorter than expected but still a very nice couple of days away as our first 2024 adventure, hopefully the first of many.
